Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge's tiger and bear residents enjoy summertime as long as there are cool pools to beat the heat in!
Since our animal residents have permanent fur coats, it's important for us to provide them with resources that keep them active yet comfortable and nothing is better than the simplicity of a stock tank pool! Most people are aware that bears enjoy taking a dip, but did you know tigers are highly fond of water? Rainy summer days at the Refuge are a cat-tastic time to see our tiger residents' frisky side emerge.

Since it is summer, we recommend visiting early before our animal residents get too hot and decide to laze around in their dens. We open at 9 AM; if you arrive at that time, you can easily spend an hour in the Discovery Section before hopping on the 10 AM guided walking tour or the 10:30 AM guided trolley tour.

If you come early in the morning, take your tour, then feel a little bummed that the animals have retreated inside their night houses to relax, don't worry! You can save your ticket and return later in the evening when the temperatures drop. We are open until 6 PM. Our Behavioral Training starts at 5 PM and is tons of fun to observe because it gets our animal residents up and active!

When planning your summer trip to the Refuge, please wear comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes and cool clothing. You may also want to bring a cooling towel to drape around your neck, as well as a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Try to hydrate before, during, and after your tour if you're walking; never hesitate to speak up if you begin to feel over-heated during your tour.
