habitat de las aves Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge's Only Rhesus Macaque Gets New Habitat

Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge's sole primate resident, Goober, was released into a new habitat Tuesday.

Goober came to the Refuge in 1993 at the age of 7 after being bounced around for several years. His original owners kept him as a pet; Goober was fond of the woman, but didn't like the man, which resulted in the man getting abusive with Goober on several occasions, including throwing the little monkey into a wall. He was then sent to a baboon refuge, where his new owner was ill-equipt to care for him. Goober kept escaping and even bit the woman on one occasion, which prompted her to remove his teeth (something a true sanctuary would not do!).

By the time Goober came to the fledgling sanctuary at Turpentine Creek, he was anxious, temperamental, grumpy, but still highly intelligent! Over the years, he has overcome many obstacles and grown to trust more of his caregivers. The implementation of our Behavioral Management Program in 2016 has made a huge difference in his confidence and has allowed him to feel more secure during medical procedures.

Originally, we were concerned that changing his environment would be too traumatic for him due to his past, but because of his progress, we decided now was the best time to try. Though he had the slightest bit of hesitation at first, Goober stepped out into the grass with gusto and seemed excited to explore his new surroundings! Of course, it helped that Emily was there the whole time with treats in hand.

Goober continues to enjoy his new space. He is staying entertained with plenty of enrichment toys and branches to clamber over. He still has the option to escape into his night house to take a break from the heat and watch some of his favorite T.V. shows.
